But even after three decades and a fulfilling life lived with HIV, he acknowledges that while it\u2019s much easier to treat today medically \u2013 changing society\u2019s perception of the virus is still a hill to climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of stigma, and this is where I&rsquo;m hoping that collectively or internationally that we look at that. And embrace people living with HIV as one of \u2018us\u2019 \u2013 an equal,\u201d says the president of the Indigenous Health Centre of Tiohti\u00e0:ke&rsquo;s board of directors. \u201cIf we don\u2019t erase stigma, we\u2019ll never stop new cases of HIV.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even forty years after the HIV epidemic began in Canada, HIV stigma persists.
